
Why We Try to Break Our Bathroom Heaters (Before You Buy Them)
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, sudden temperature jumps, and constant moisture hanging in the air. It’s the kind of environment that eats electrical components for breakfast. We could just hope our infrared lamps hold up, but “hoping” isn’t a great engineering strategy. Instead, we try to kill them in the lab first.
The “Steam Room” Treatment
We take every batch of heaters and throw them into a climate chamber. We crank the humidity up to about 85% and keep the heat high for days on end. It’s basically a torture chamber for lamps. Why? Because moisture is a sneaky thing. It finds the tiniest gap in a seal and crawls inside. Once it’s in, it starts oxidizing the filaments or causing short circuits. By pushing the units to their absolute limit, we can see exactly where the seals give way or where a coating starts to flake.
Where Things Usually Go Wrong
We spend a lot of time obsessing over the seals. If the quartz glass isn’t perfectly locked to the base, moisture leaks in. That’s when the halogen gas escapes or the filament just gives up and burns out way too early. We also watch for “creepage”—that’s just a fancy way of saying moisture created a little bridge of electricity where it shouldn’t be. And then there’s the coating. If it peels, it’s not just about looking ugly. It actually messes with how the heat comes off the glass, which can create dangerous hot spots. Not ideal.
The Great Balancing Act
Here’s the tricky part: we can’t just glue everything shut with industrial epoxy. If we make a seal too rigid to keep out the steam, the glass will literally snap when the lamp heats up and expands. It’s a constant tug-of-war between keeping the water out and giving the materials room to breathe. We spend a lot of time tuning those tolerances. We want a lamp that can take a beating from a steamy shower but won’t crack under its own heat. It’s a fine line, but it’s the only way to make sure your heater actually lasts.
