
Getting Bathroom Heaters Right: Heat Without the Glare
Most bathroom infrared lamps are built for one thing: getting you warm, fast. But there’s a catch. Standard halogen bulbs tend to blast out a lot of visible light and near-infrared rays. It’s that harsh, blinding glare we’ve all experienced. For adults, it’s annoying. For babies, whose eyes are still developing, it can actually be pretty stressful. Keeping the eyes safe We figured out a way to fix this by tweaking the light curve. Instead of using a basic quartz tube, we use special coatings and filtered quartz to kill off that sharp “blue light” peak. Basically, we’re filtering the light so the heat goes straight to your skin, but your eyes don’t take a hit. It makes the light feel soft and gentle rather than like a spotlight in your face. The nuts and bolts Under the hood, we use high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because these things heat up and cool down fast, and cheap glass would just warp. Inside, there’s a tungsten filament sitting in a halogen-filled atmosphere. This lets us crank up the temperature for a denser, deeper heat without the wire just snapping. One quick tip if you’re installing these: keep an eye on your voltage drop. And since bathrooms are, well, wet, make sure the seal around the R7s or Sk15 base is airtight. If a little bit of steam leaks in, it’ll fry the filament in a heartbeat. The trade-off Now, here’s the honest part. When you filter out the harsh light to protect your eyes, you lose a bit of that instant “punch” you get from a standard lamp. It takes a few seconds longer to really kick in. To make up for that, you’ll want to be smart about your wattage. We usually suggest staying between 250W and 600W per lamp. That way, you still get that cozy, warm feeling the moment you step out of the shower, without the blinding light.
