If you’re picking out infrared lamps for a bathroom, start with an IPX5 rating. Period. You need to know that if someone splashes water or the steam gets heavy, the unit isn’t going to fry. But the real trick isn’t the waterproof rating—it’s getting the wattage right. Too much and you’re wasting money; too little and your guests are still shivering.
Finding the Sweet Spot for Wattage
I see this all the time: engineers go overboard on a tiny powder room. If the space is under 3m², stick with 250W to 400W. Here’s why. If you cram too much power into a small stall, you create this weird pocket of intense heat. The thermostat picks it up instantly, shuts the lamp off, then kicks back on a minute later. It’s a constant cycle that just wears the lamp out faster. For those mid-sized bathrooms (around 4-7m²), you’ll want to bump it up to 600W or 800W. And for the big master baths? A single lamp just won’t cut it. You’ll end up with one scorching spot and a bunch of cold corners. Your best bet is to wire two 600W units in parallel. It spreads the warmth around and actually feels comfortable.
How Shortwave IR Actually Works
These lamps use shortwave radiation. It’s different from those old convection heaters that try to warm up the air. IR goes straight for the skin and the surfaces in the room. Because of that, distance is everything. Mount it too high, and you’ll barely feel the heat. Mount it too low, and you risk overheating the fixture itself. It’s a bit of a balancing act.
The Trade-offs
Sure, higher wattage means the room feels warm the second you flip the switch. But it puts a lot more pressure on your circuit breakers. If you’re putting a few high-wattage lamps in one zone, please check your wire gauge. Thin wires can actually heat up under the load of several 800W lamps, which can lead to a voltage drop. You’ll get the heat you want, but only if your electrical panel is actually built to handle that kind of peak draw.
