
Keeping Things Safe When You’re Heating CNTs Around Flammable Chemicals
If you’re fabricating carbon nanotubes, you know the drill: you need pinpoint thermal control, but you’re usually doing it right next to volatile cleaning agents. In that kind of environment, a standard infrared lamp isn’t just a tool—it’s a liability. We’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to stop that. Our IR heaters come with specialized encapsulation, basically a protective shell that keeps the heat in and the flammable vapors out. It’s the difference between a stressful workday and a safe one.
How the seal actually works
We don’t just wrap the lamp in some generic material and call it a day. We use a hermetically sealed sleeve made of quartz or ceramic. This puts a hard wall between the electrical filaments and the air around them. Why? Because corrosive chemical fumes love to eat through heating elements, leading to a quick burnout. We also use high-grade sealants at the ends to make sure no sparks jump into the air. If you’re working with aggressive solvents, this barrier is the only thing standing between your lab and a flash fire.It’s not optional.
Staying steady under pressure
CNT growth is picky. If your temperature swings, your batch is ruined. To handle this, we spec our power supplies to kill off voltage spikes—the kind of surges that could crack the protective sleeve. We also matched the thermal expansion of the sleeve to the lamp’s output. This means as things heat up fast, the materials expand together instead of snapping under the stress.
The trade-off (Because nothing is perfect)
Here’s the honest part: adding that protective layer adds thermal mass. Since there’s more material to heat up, your ramp-up time will be a bit slower than if you were using a bare bulb. You’ll probably need to tweak your PID settings to handle that slight lag. If you don’t, you might overshoot your target temperature. Just a heads-up.
Getting it running
We designed these to be drop-in replacements for your standard IR arrays. You just wire them into your existing controller and you’re good to go. But do me a favor:double-check your seals. If there’s a leak in the outer housing, the specialized encapsulation can’t do its job. Keep your workspace clean and make sure your ventilation is actually rated for the chemicals you’re using. Simple, but it saves lives.
