
How to Actually Size an Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom
Let’s be honest: nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. It’s the worst part of the morning. If you’re looking at infrared (IR) heaters to fix this, you need to get the wattage right. If you go too low, you’ll just feel a faint breeze of warmth that disappears the moment you move. Go too high, and you’re basically standing in front of a toaster—uncomfortable and a waste of electricity. The trick is remembering that IR doesn’t really “heat the room.” It heats you. It warms your skin and those damp tiles, not the air.
Finding Your Number
Depending on how much space you’re dealing with, here is a good rule of thumb for what to look for: **Small powder rooms (under 4m²):**A 400W to 600W shortwave lamp usually does the trick. It’s just enough to keep you from shivering. **Average bathrooms (4m² to 8m²):**You’ll want something in the 800W to 1200W range. **Master baths or rooms with huge ceilings:**Go for 1500W or more. Better yet, put in two smaller units in different spots. It stops those annoying cold patches from popping up in the corners. One quick heads-up: before you buy a powerhouse unit, check your circuit breaker. These things pull a decent amount of current, and the last thing you want is the lights going out right when you’re soaping up.
Where to Put It
Shortwave IR is great because it’s instant. You flick the switch, and you feel it immediately. No waiting around for a radiator to warm up. For the best experience, mount the heater about 1.8m to 2.2m high and tilt it slightly down. You want that warmth hitting your shoulders and torso. And a pro tip: if you have a tiny bathroom, avoid one giant, high-wattage lamp. You’ll end up with “hot spots” where your chest feels scorched but your toes are still freezing. Two smaller lamps spaced apart feel much more natural.
A Note on Lifespan
Here is the thing about pushing these lamps to their absolute limit: it wears them out. When you run a lamp at its max rated wattage, the filament gets incredibly hot, which makes the tungsten evaporate faster. If you run it at 100% capacity around the clock, it’s going to burn out way sooner than it should. I usually suggest adding a 10% buffer to your power needs.
